More Nyad

Experienced marathon swimmer and professor of law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, Hadar Aviram, has recently written an in-depth analysis of the hub-bub resultant after Nyad’s assisted Cuba-to-Florida swim last year and the production of a global standard for marathon swimming; The Rules if you will. It is well worth the read.

Dear reader(s) of my blog know that I was very critical of Nyad’s swim last year. I wrote a bit about her, and even got a new fan of the blog as a result, who spent the time to write me a nice hate-filled compliment!

If you’re not in the mood to read all 55 pages, skip to Parts II and III (after reading the intro that is). If you’re new to my blog and/or marathon swimming, read Part II which will give you a little background.

Dedicated readers will be rewarded with a little surprise in the article with yours truly being quoted. Twice!

      1. The paper mentioned that marathon swimmers must deal with some difficulties like jellyfish, sharks or plankton. Have you ever swam into plankton? What’s that like?!

  1. And finally, the cyclocross community, to a lesser degree, has a similar divide because some cross guys don’t want mountain bikes in their races because it gives them an advantage.

    1. Interesting, but slightly different, yes? I guess a closer parallel would be if we had an open water race, like say the Manhattan Marathon swim or one of the old English Channel races in the 50’s. If the rules called for EC rules viz. swim suit, but some guy shows up and swims (and the organizers let him) in a wetsuit, and s/he is ranked among the “naked” swimmers, then that would be like the cyclocross example, yes?

      1. I should have continued with the thought but what I was thinking was that after mountain bikes started showing up at races many in the community got together and said, “Okay, we gotta start making some rules. What if we….?” (they also started messing with the races, making them impossible for mt bikers to ride without getting off)

But yes, did he win that race as a cross guy or a cross guy on a mt bike?
